Meat Production
Goats for meat production include primarily Boer, Kiko, Spanish and Tennessee Meat goats; however, all breeds of goats eventually are sent for slaughter.
Chevon is a lean, nutritious, flavourful red meat. Chevon is the most widely eaten red meat worldwide! In Canada, the demand for chevon is growing due to increasing cultural diversity and awareness of its healthy nature.
Canadian consumption exceeds Canadian production.
In 2004 from January to July 31, Canada imported nearly 800,000 tonnes of goat meat, valued at nearly $3 million.
